Encourage One Another

But exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin” (Hebrews 3:13).

A great New Testament example of encouragement to one another is Barnabas. His name was Joseph (“may God help”);  A Jew and a Levite, however, the apostles—because such was his outstanding trait–surnamed him Barnabas,  which means “son of consolation,” or “son of exhortation,” or “son of encouragement.” (Acts 4:36).

Let us take note of his example in the early church and apply these principles in our Christian lives today.

Be someone who brings blessings to others. “And Joses, who was also named Barnabas by the apostles (which is translated Son of Encouragement), a Levite of the country of Cyprus, having land, sold it, and brought the money and laid it at the apostles’ feet” (Acts 4:36).

Be someone who breaks barriers for others. “And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple” (Acts 9:26). He interceded on behalf of Saul by endorsing him as a faithful disciple.

Be someone who builds bridges for others. “And after some days Paul said to Barnabas, “Let us return and visit the brothers in every city where we proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they are.”  Now Barnabas wanted to take with them John called Mark.  But Paul thought best not to take with them one who had withdrawn from them in Pamphylia and had not gone with them to the work.  And there arose a sharp disagreement, so that they separated from each other. Barnabas took Mark with him and sailed away to Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and departed, having been commended by the brothers to the grace of the Lord. And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches” (Acts 15:36-41).

By reading 2 Timothy 4:11 we can see that Barnabas’ confidence in John Mark was not misplaced.  How many of our brethren in the Lord have, like Mark, turned back, but, to this day, have not returned, feeling that their brethren would not receive them or forgive them?  Let us be of strength to those who have fallen.
