Who Are We? Not A Denomination 2
When one determines to allow the Bible to be the only rule of faith and practice, then speaking in Bible terminology will be the goal.
To avoid being denominational in our speech we should avoid saying:
“Church of Christ people.”
“Church of Christ preachers.”
“Church of Christ doctrine.”
“Come, let us hear what the Church of Christ teaches.”
“I am teaching him our position.”
“The Church of Christ is right in all points of doctrine and practice.”
In using Bible language, we would say:
“Christians,” or “God’s children.”
“Gospel preachers,” “evangelists.”
“New Testament doctrine.”
“Come, let us hear the word of the Lord.”
“I am teaching him God’s word.”
“The word of God is right and we are making an effort to conform the church unto the same.”
In an article discussing the language of Ashdod in Nehemiah 13:24, Chad Ramsey cites our need to be precise in our language:
It is not unusual to find individuals who speak of the Lord’s church as if it is merely one denomination among many. This erroneous idea is promoted when the title “Church of Christ” is listed alongside the various denominational groups of our day. When this is done, it is hard to see the church as anything other than one group among many. Such, however, is certainly not the case. Rather than being a title, “church of Christ” is a description. It is the church belonging to Christ (cf. Matthew 16:18; Acts 20:28); it is the Lord’s church.
The church is not a sect or denomination anymore than was the church that came into existence on the first Pentecost following the resurrection of Jesus (cf. Acts 2). If we obey the same plan of salvation individuals in the first century obeyed, the Lord will add us to the same church they were added to (v. 47). This does not make one who obeys the gospel a “Church of Christ.” It makes one a Christian (11:26) and a member of the Lord’s body (1 Corinthians 12:13; cf. Colossians 1:18). To speak imprecisely about this matter, whether inadvertently or ignorantly, is to speak the language of Ashdod (G.A. July, 2015, 27-28).
Scriptural phraseology is important because it is pleasing to God, it teaches others to do only as the Bible directs by our example (1 Peter 3:15), and it is a distinctive feature of the New Testament church established by Christ. May we be careful to use Bible names to describe Bible things in Bible ways. “Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 1:13).
On Thursday nights this summer we will have a small groups Bible Study for all college aged Thursday nights. This Thursday night TBD.
William Ireland would love to have some additional volunteers to serve as greeters. If you are willing to serve in this important work, please see William.
