Basic Biblical literacy should be a goal of every Christian. It is important to have comprehension, knowledge and the ability to apply the critical themes of the Bible. Below is an attempt to highlight a reasonable scope for any Christian.
Key Biblical terms defined and understood Biblically (Agape, Faith, Hope, Grace, Law, Covenant, Redemption, Righteousness, Baptism, Holiness, Church).
The different types of Biblical literature (Poetic, Historical, Epistle, Prophetic, Apocalyptic, Parable, Gospel).
How to use Biblical tools, whether online or books, such as marginal references, concordances, commentaries, interlinear and Bible dictionaries.
The three types of translations (word for word, dynamic equivalent and paraphrase), examples, and strengths and weaknesses of each.
The distinctive theme and content of most Bible books (e.g. Gospels – the Life of Christ, Job-Suffering, Acts – the spread of the early church, James – good Christian living, etc.
Great New Testament teachings (e.g. Sermon on the Mount, Parable of the Sower, Good Samaritan, Prodigal Son, Peter’s sermon on Pentecost, Paul on Mars Hill, Romans 6, 12, John 17).
Knowledge (Know from memory):
Books of the Bible in order (so you can find any passage quickly).
The books assigned to their classifications.
General Chronology of the Old and New Testament (major Character and Events).
Major Characters and their events (e.g. Adam, Eve, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Samuel, David, Daniel Esther, Nehemiah, John the Baptist, Jesus, The Apostles, Acts Converts, Paul, Timothy).
Key elements of Biblical Geography and be able to find the on a map.
The Plan of Salvation with Scriptures.
Scriptures that can be located and (substantially) quoted: Ten Commandments, The 23rd Psalm, Beatitudes, Fruit of the Spirit, Greatest Commands, Great Commission, Golden Rule, Golden Text, Christian Graces, Acts 2:38, Ephesians 2:8-10, Hebrews 11:1, John 1:5-7.
