Who Are We?

It is often stated that the churches of Christ are different. This generally comes from individuals investigating a congregation for the first time. What contributes to people noticing that we are different?  Is it the name? Is it the absence of mechanical instruments? Is it because of the concern for the salvation of people’s souls? Is it the fact there are no earthly headquarters of churches of Christ? Is it because we observe the Lord’s Supper every first day of the week? Is it because teaching baptism is essential in order to be a Christian?

The church. God planned and designed it.  The church of Christ was established in Jerusalem on the first Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus Christ (Isaiah 2:2-3; Acts 2). This church would have a distinctive founder, builder, head, body, mission, plan of salvation, membership, worship, name, doctrine, and work (Isaiah 28:16; Ephesians 2:20; Colossians 1:18; Ephesians 4:4; Mark 16:15; Acts 2:38; Acts 2:47; John 4:24; Acts 11:26; Colossians 3:17; 1 Corinthians 15:58). The church of Christ is the church of the New Testament.

Origin. The New Testament church has the right origin. Passages such as Daniel 2, Isaiah 2, and Joel 2 predict the establishment of the church of Christ. The second chapter of Acts shows us the fulfillment of these prophecies. The Kingdom was to be established in the “last days” (Isaiah 2:2), in Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:2; 28:16; Zechariah 1:10). The extent of the kingdom was to include “all nations.” (Isaiah 62:2; Matthew 28:19). This could not have happened before Pentecost (Matthew 10:5-6). The gospel of Christ was preached to all creation (Colossians 1:23). The church of Christ was established in the days of the Roman kings, according to Daniel’s interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream in Daniel 2. The church of Christ would never be destroyed (Daniel 2:44). The church of Christ has Divine origin.

The Church of Christ pleads for a return to New Testament Christianity. We speak where the Bible speaks and keep silent where it is silent, calling Bible things by Bible names and doing Bible things in Bible ways. “We ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29). The Lord’s church is called out of the world. “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son” (Colossians 1:13). People who have been added to the body of Christ by the Lord (Acts 2:47), are a cleansed people who have been washed by the blood of Christ. The apostle Paul revealed, “That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ” (Ephesians 2:12-13). Once we were without the salvation that is found in Jesus Christ, but now we are cleansed and purified by the blood of Christ.

This article begins a series of looking into “who we are,” seeking to understand our identity, that we are different on purpose by God’s design.
