Rules For Bible Study

God wants His Word read and studied. “Seek and read from the book of the Lord” (Isaiah 34:16).

It was customary for the Word to be read:  “And all the people gathered as one man into the square before the Water Gate. And they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses that the Lord had commanded Israel.  So Ezra the priest brought the Law before the assembly, both men and women and all who could understand what they heard, on the first day of the seventh month.  And he read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women and those who could understand. And the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law” (Nehemiah 8:1-3).  Applying God’s Word to life was also commanded and followed:  “Moses came and told the people all the words of the Lord and all the rules. And all the people answered with one voice and said, “All the words that the Lord has spoken we will do” (Exodus 24:3).  A blessing is placed upon those who read and obey (Revelation 1:3).  We are commanded to study the Bible  (2 Timothy 2:15; 1 Timothy 4:13, 15).  Jesus said “Have you not read…” (Matthew 12:3), implying that the Scriptures would be read and studied.

Ignorance of the Bible and its teaching is devastating and destructive (Matthew 22:29; Acts 3:17; Ephesians 4:18) and people will be lost because of it (Acts 17:30; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).

In 1890, Dr. Carroll Kendrick published a book titled “Live Religious Issues of the Day:  Rules of Bible Study.” Consider three rules for Bible Study brother Kendrick outlined in his book.  First rule“Cherish the love of Truth.”  We are to love the truth, which is God’s Word (John 8:32; 17:17). Paul found some who did not love the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:10).  The battle rages between truth and error in our world.  To be faithful and pleasing to God, who is our Creator, we must always follow the way of truth!  For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe” (1 Thessalonians 2:13). Second rule: “We must act from proper motives when we search for truth.”  We should be reading and studying the Bible without any preconceived ideas.  Our reasons must be to find out what God wants us to do and how He wants us to live and use our life for His purpose and glory.  We are not to read into the Bible what we think it should say or what we desire for it to say.   Integrity in approaching the reading and interpretation of the Bible is essential in being in a right relationship with God.  Third rule:  “Rightly divide the word of Truth (2 Timothy 2:15).” The two-fold division of the Bible between the Old and New Testaments must be recognized and understood in properly reading, studying and interpreting God’s Word.  An abundance of evidence points to the fact that we are not under the Old Law any longer. Romans 6:14 makes the definite statement, “You are not under law.”  We are dead (separated, Jas 2:26) to the law (Romans 7:14). Verse 7 of Romans chapter 7 clearly teaches that the law to which we are dead included the Ten Commandments; for, “you shall not covet,” is a part of such.  That which was written in stones (the old law, Exodus 34:29.35) is done away (2Cor 3:6-18).  The law was to be until the seed (Christ) should come; and, Christ has come (Galatians 3:16, 19).

May God bless us as we read and study the words of life.
