Minister of Spiritual Growth
Missionary in Residence
October 21, 2018
Last Sunday morning Brett announced my new title of minister of spiritual growth here at GHR. I am looking forward to helping promote, develop and facilitate growth at whatever stage we are in spirituality.
The spiritual growth minister’s goal is to recruit members who are willing to develop themselves into better students of God’s Word, who are willing to stretch themselves into opportunities to serve and work, and who are willing to be mentored for the service of Christ. This is accomplished by creating a culture conducive to growth: to provide opportunities (classes, studies, discussions – scheduled within church meeting times as well as outside), resources (books & materials), experience (serve, teach, and participate in worship, ministries, programs) and relationships, so members can study and develop skills and grow in their relationship to God.
Plan of Action
In this plan, we find at least three action steps:
And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love (Ephesians 4:11-16).
To make the word of God fully known, the mystery hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ (Colossians 1:25-28).
Growth is not spontaneous, but happens developmentally. We are commanded to grow: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen” (2 Peter 3:18).
God’s Word identifies people at varying stages in their spiritual growth:
Infants (1 Peter 2:2)
Children (Ephesians 4:14; Hebrews 5:13)
Young Men/Adults (John 15:16; Galatians 5:22-23)
Fathers/Parents (1 John 2:13-14)
We must make effort in whatever stage of life we are in to increase in faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love (2 Peter 1:5-7).
We have events scheduled for 2019 and beyond that are opportunities to learn, grow and develop into more Christ-like individuals. May God bless our efforts to be more mature in Him.
