Who Are We? Worship In Spirit & Truth 2

God rejects vain (Matthew 15:9), ignorant (Acts 17:23), and will (Colossians 2:23) worship.  He desires to be worshiped in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).

God has also set in place the day He desires the church to come together and worship Him: the first day of the week (1 Corinthians 16:1-2).

Divinely Prescribed Acts of Worship

The New Testament pattern gives five divinely prescribed acts of worship for man to engage in congregationally.

Prayer. Prayer was also a part of the early church’s worship. (Ephesians 5:20). The Bible exhorts us to “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) We must engage in prayer when we come together to worship God (Acts 2:42).

Partake of Lord’s Supper. We are commanded to partake each first day of the week. The disciples came together “to break bread” (Acts 20:7) Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ instituted this feast and explained the meaning: “Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins (Matthew 26:26-28).

Preaching and Teaching. The New Testament church assembly also provided opportunity for preaching and instruction (Acts 20:7-12).

Singing. New Testament Christians sing “addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart” (Ephesians 5:19).  “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16).

The Bible gives us authority to engage in congregational singing. Mechanical instrumental music, choirs, praise teams, solos, quartets, or any other kind of special music will not fulfill what God requires in our worship to Him and is without Bible authority and is therefore sin.

Giving. The early Christians gave as they had prospered. “Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given order to the churches of Galatia, even so do ye. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come” (1 Corinthians 16:2).

True worship comes from true worshippers who worship God according to His Will. Worship is not entertainment.  It is not a social hour. We honor God and praise him by acts he has authorized!  If we worship ignorantly, vainly, or by our own will, we sin.
